Changsha may be far from the coast, but it is one of China’s major construction machinery manufacturing hubs. A mature industrial supply chain, strong university research capabilities and decades of expertise in heavy equipment are helping this inland city extend its manufacturing strengths from land to the deep sea.

One result is a 7-ton tracked work-class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) capable of operating at depths of up to 6,000 meters. It has already completed 48 days of continuous operation and traveled more than 200 kilometers along the seafloor without failure. Today, such equipment is being used in offshore wind power, subsea cable operations and marine engineering.

From construction machinery to deep-sea equipment, this inland city is taking its manufacturing capabilities into ever deeper waters.
